For a long time North Star has offered sharpening and alignment services to our local customers. We have decided to expand that service to all our friends and customers near and far.
A sharp clean edge on a bonsai tool is essential for you to do the correct job. Not only is it horticulturally sound, but it is a must for aesthetic reasons. A dull or misaligned tool can minimize all the hard work you put into your tree. This valuable service will extend the life of your tool and protect and extend your tool investment as well.
The service is a simple and basic one. North Star Bonsai will preform the following services when sharpening your bonsai hand tools.
We will clean the surface of your entire tool to rid it of rust, sap, and other foreign contaminates.
We will correct the alignment on your tool and bring it back as close to the manufacturers specifications
as possible. This will be done by filing away the hinge stop (if your tool has one) and by grinding the
cutting surface to provide a good mating surface between the two blades.
You should remember that if you have previously shaved off material from your tool it will effect how well we can provide an exact alignment for you. If there is little to work with, then this will effect what we can provide you.
We will sharpen and hone your cutting blades to a fine edge. After you receive your tool back you should
be very careful of the blade edges ..... THEY WILL EASILY CUT FLESH!
After sharpening and honing we will test cut using your tool to determine that it is preforming correctly. The blade edges are given a second honing after the test cut to be sure you have the sharpest blade possible upon its return to you.
When we are completed with your sharpening service we use a buffing wheel and jewelers rouge to bring out the luster, and get rid of any deep seated contaminates. We think your tool should look good as it preforms.Your tools are then oiled to protect them and provide lubrication to the hinge pin.
To maintain your tools after you receive them we suggest using the diamond hone we do. Its simple to use, even if you never have had any experience sharpening before. Just click the button below.

Additional Services:
North star Bonsai can remove minor chips and gouges from your tools cutting surfaces. These repairs are a nominal charge, but first must be seen to be quoted prior to repair. Below is an example of a chip repair.
What we can' t do:
As much as we would like to, and we have tried, we can't replace missing parts or material from the tool. If your bonsai hand tool is missing big chunks from it. Then more than most likely we will not be able to provide a repair for you that we would be proud of, and one that you would be satisfied with. At this point your money is best spent on a new tool.
